The photograph that started it all

Since my time at art school the studio has always been a way to escape the outside world and a space for reflection. When my daughter was born I set up a studio in the basement and tried to take as many photos of her with myself and our family.

During a visit from my Mum we spent a morning taking photos. Four months after she passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. She was the kind of person we all assumed would live to an old age and she had big plans for adventures with her Granddaughter. All that disappeared overnight and instead I was left with the reality that they wouldn't know each other.

This photo became my treasure. One to pass down to my daughter. Of course, I have other photos, phone photos, every day photos of them together but this one is special. I will be eternally grateful that we took the time out of our day to take a photo thoughtfully, without distraction.

This is the photograph that made me decide to pursue family photography and help others create their treasures.
